Summary

[edit]
Description

Sometimes known as the Cathedral of Stirling it is one of the few extant ecclesiastical buildings in Great Britain where a reigning monarch was crowned. James V of Scotland was crowned in the nearby Chapel Royal of Stirling Castle in 1513. His grandson, James VI, was crowned at the Church of the Holy Rude in 1567.

Other intact buildings to have hosted British coronations include:

Winchester Cathedral, where the 2nd coronation of Richard I took place. In 1170 his older brother, known as Henry the Young King, was also crowned there – but his father, Henry II, was the reigning monarch at the time.. Henry II was still King in 1183 when the "Young King" died during a campaign to dislodge his father. In 1189 the second son of Henry II was crowned as Richard I in Westminster Abbey. In 1194, after returning from the Third Crusade, Richard felt it necessary to confirm his position as King of England and therefore arranged a second coronation at Winchester.

Westminster Abbey where virtually all the remaining monarchs since 1066 have been crowned.

Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh, is not included as it is now in ruins. However, many Scottish monarchs including James II, Margaret Tudor, Mary of Guise and Anne of Denmark were crowned there. Charles I of England was also crowned there In a ceremony which, to the annoyance of the Edinburgh establishment, included high Anglican rites.
