[edit]DescriptionThe Church Within A Church (2863271898).jpg |
This is a detail of one of the wall paintings in the old Church of St. Mary of Zion in Axum. Ethiopia. Directly above this image is a glorious painting of St. George slaying the ever-luckless dragon. Atypically for our visit to Ethiopia, we were pressed for time the afternoon we saw the interior of the old Church of St. Mary of Zion. I have to admit that because of the rush, I took photos without really seeing what I was photographing. Consequently, it wasn't until I came home and reviewed the photos that I realized the building in this wall painting is . . . the old Church of St. Mary of Zion! What's remarkable is how little the church seems to have changed since this painting was executed. |
