Thus the passenger is enabled to leanforward and better view the constant panoramicscene before him. A constant kaleidoscopic transmutation takesplace as the animated scene dissolves itself andthe living cinematographic display unfolds. Longvistas of gorgeous signboards in gold, vermilion,and green open out in continual succession, a feastof colour. The bright rays of a fiery tropical sunare tempered by loose boards or trellis-work, orawnings covering the shaded streets. Glints ofsunlight percolate, settling in radiant gleams onany non-absorbent object, and relieving fromgloom anything they touch, though the generaleffect in many a street is that of a shaded half-toned light. It is a bustling scene that meets the eye asone is whisked through some main thoroughfare. 216

Through Crowded Streets A constant stream is flowing along its narrow con-fines. Gentlemen in silk robes of tender hues ofcerulean blue and satin jackets gleaming in purpleand other colours, are jostled by coolies carryingagricultural produce and manures for the fields,and elbowed by fishmongers with live fish in tubsof water. Now a string of blind beggars meandersthrough the thick traffic, making for shop aftershop, to extort by their monotonous whine a straycash or two ; while a sturdier rowdyish scamp,with self-inflicted blood-stained wounds, demandsalms with impudence and assurance. Anon awreck of humanity with festering hands _and fast-rotting, toeless feet rubs shoulders with theelegantly dressed merchant, who loathes the sightof the distorted and swollen face of the dreadedleper. The burden-carriers of all kinds and classespush by, heralding their advent by their twofoldcries, some to clear the path before them, andothers to ease the weight of their heavy loads.Those in pairs c
