Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Cheneys at Toddington - geograph.org.uk - 579874.jpg |
English: The Cheneys at Toddington. In the south transept (which actually faces southeast) are a number of effigies. They form two family groups The Cheneys seen here, and the older ones representing the Peyvre family. Whether the two families were related I don't know. Further reading see[1]
In order from the front looking back are: Dame Jane Cheney (face missing) died 1614 Lord Henry Cheney, husband of the above, died 1587 Dame Ann Cheney died 1581 - perhaps she was Henry's mother. About 20 miles away in Buckinghamshire is a village called Chenies which is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Bedford, before they moved to Woburn Abbey - which is just a few miles from Toddington, so I wonder if the families are connected, though the Dukes of Bedford have the surname Russell. The church at Chenies has a mausoleum which houses the magnificent tombs of the Russells, but this is not open to the public I believe, being still private to the family. Note : In the niche on the back wall can be seen the effigy of Margaret Peyvre (see 579878) |
