Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The larger part of the walls and towers belongs to the Middle Byzantine period (9th-12th c. A.D.), with later additions at the extremities, especially at its northern section. Its typically Byzantine masonry features roughly hewn blocks, with either one worked face or an almost rectangular shape, set in horizontal courses, with thin bricks interspersed primarily in the horizontal joints. Built into the fortification wall are several marble architectural elements, some with relief decoration, from earlier buildings (houses, temples, churches) of the Acrocorinth and its surrounding region. Cannon ports of the Ottoman and Venetian periods are evident along the entire fortification line, on the upper parts of the walls, towers, and gate. The towers were also used as storerooms. A traveler of the 17th c. reports that the towers on either side of the third gate were used as storerooms for wood and weaponry, but also for corn, barley and rice. Text: Inscription next to the third gate.
