Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Cades Cove Corn Crib.jpg |
English: The Cades Cove Historic Corn Crib. Corn was the most important crop in Cades Cove. This crop provided food for the people and the livestock. The farmers harvested the corn and placed their harvest in the corn crib. The slats of the corn crib circulated the air t, allowing the corn to naturally dry out and preventing the corn from becoming moldy and inedible. The platform for the corn was raised to keep mice, rats and other pests away from their food. This simple method provided ample dried corn year round. The dried corn was ground at one of the seven original grist mills at Cades Cove. The ground corn was made into cornbread, grits, hominy, cornmeal and other forms of food.
