Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Butts of the Wrekin Range - geograph.org.uk - 1116697.jpg |
English: The Butts of the Wrekin Range This is the 'operational' end of the old Wrekin Firing Range. The sand butts are on the right, and there are still a few lead bullets to be excavated from the sand. The target operators would stand in the sheltered dip on the left (it's actually a concrete bunker that's not visible in this view), raising and lowering each target on a mechanical frame. Many of these are still there, albeit a little rusty now. In the meantime, those who were doing the shooting were lying prone at the 100yd, 200yd, 300yd marks down the hill to the northwest. I seem to recall the marks went up to 800yds, but that involved firing across the lane.
I know all this as I used to shoot here as a young lad, a member of the school Army Cadet Force in the 1970s. Happy days. |
