Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Broken Banner - geograph.org.uk - 1755520.jpg |
English: The Broken Banner This is the banner that was broken by Oliver Cromwell on Thursday 11th march 2010 when the locomotive became the first full sized train (as opposed to just a locomotive) to cross from the national network to the poppy line in 46 years. The level crossing was replaced for steam excursions (and diesel) plus locomotive movements to the railway. One of the selling points being that it will bring people to the town. (500 or so on the train, then the others coming to see it). The opening ceremony certainly proved this as well over 4000 people turned up! The event was covered by Look East plus ITV Anglian along with the papers front pages in the morning. The area is popular with tourists due the scenery and amount of activities. This is why the Sunday Telegraph put the poppy line in the top 5 heritage lines in the country (along with North York Moors, Swanage, Bluebell and Severn Valley) along with the Sunday Times who named the line the best all round in the country. |
