English: The Braschi Antinous is in the Sala Rotonda (Round Hall) of the Vatican Museums.
This 3.3 metre tall, statue depicts Antinous as a fusion of two gods: Dionysus and Osiris. It is dated to 138 AD and was rediscovered at Hadrian’s Villa near Tivoli. Antinous was the friend and favourite of Hadrian who drowned in the Nile in 130 AD. Shortly after, he was declared to be a god by the Emperor. and portraits of him began to appear across the Roman Empire. Reportedly, there are over a hundred statues of him in various museums. |
