horizontally branched nerves, twoor three times longer than the petiole. Peduncles several-flowered, more roughly villous than any other part of theplant, shorter than the leaf. Calyx large, membranous,sericeously downy, whitish, sprinkled over in our specimenwith dots; /e«/?e^A^ elliptic, pointed, two outer ones largest,about three fourths of an inch, or thereabout, high. Bracteslarge, of the same colour and substance as the leaflets of thecalyx, caducous, placed below tlie flowers or at the base ofthe peduncles. Co7^o//a white; .se^mew/^ rounded. Stigmacapitate. Hermann speaks of the roots as woody, and as being ofthe thickness of the thumb, and says that they descend tothe depth of three or four yards into the giound. He foundthe plant abundantly in wet shady places, at the sides ofditches, behind garden hedges and such-like places at somedistance from the sea, both in the Island of Ceylon and onthe coast of Malabar; and describes the flowers as of thesize of the common Bind-weed.
