Northend THE old inns scattered throughoutNew England during the earlydays of our countrys historyare for the most part but memoriesnow; the great hotels with their pa-latial appointments have supersededthem, as they better satisfy the luxury-loving tastes of twentieth century hu-manity. In early days, however, the old ordi-naries were important factors, and hereour ancestors gathered to discuss thelatest gossip, as well as matters ofimportance, as they contentedly sippedtheir toddy before the great woodfires. An inn was opened in every town byorder of the General Court, and wasplaced under the jurisdiction of theminister and tithingman, who wereinvested with authority to enforce thelaws prohibiting the inordinate saleof liquors.
