butthey added not a little to the familyexpenses, and were watched jealouslyand extinguished as soon as possible. In 1634 no candles could be purchasedfor less than fourpence, and few Colon-ists could afford such extravagance. As no tallow suitable for the makingof these candles could be obtained inthis country, Governor Winthrop sentto his son in England to send over or-dinary tallow or suet, in order that theColonists could make them. At a later time crude oil was extractedfrom the livers of fish, and used in tinlanterns, which were always to befound in the homes of the Colonists, hanging on a nail at one side of thefireplace and ready for any emergency. The wicks used in these lanterns weremade of loosely spun hemp and tow,and were often dipped in saltpetre. Sometimes iron saucers with atwisted rag for a wick were filled withthis oil, and used in lieu of lamps. The Betty lamp was one of the firstthat was practical. It was made ofpewter, iron, or brass, was circular, Old-time Lights .67

Old-time Sc oval, or triangular in form, and wasvery shallow. After being filled withtallow or grease, a wick, or twisted rag,was placed in the liquid, and lightedby means of the flint or steel, or witha live coal; for matches were an un-known convenience at that time. Among the many interesting antiquesto be found in Salem, Mass., is oneof these earliest lamps that standsabout six inches high. It is made ofiron, with a lip like that of a pitcherand a short and curved handle at theback. The middle is filled with oil,and in this is placed the twisted ragwhich rests on the nose. Traditionhas it that this particular lamp did ser-vice in the time> of the witchcraft de-lusion, and was used to light the pris-oners to jail. The spermaceti which was ob-tained from the head of the whale wasvaluable in the making of candles, and it was commonly thought that the onesmade of this material gave much morelight than the ordinary tallow candles. A factory was established as early as1762 in Germant
