Bureau Cover of Embroidered Handkerchiefs received a fine hunting rifle in return;but Mary is sometimes tempted togive mother that pretty handkerchief,because she knows she will be welcometo carry it herself, or, worse still, thecut-glass dish that she, Mary, admiresso much, even though she knows per-fectly well that mother is longing forthe two or three bouillon spoons neces-sary to complete her set. Perhaps youdo not know what some friend wants.Look carefully to see if there is notsomething that she really needs for hercomfort or pleasure. Last Christmasa woman, who apparently had every-thing that even an exacting heart coulddesire, received a pair of bedroom slip-pers, and confessed with her thanks thatshe had needed them for years, butobstinately refrained from buying themfor herself, because, she said, itwas so humiliating. No one ever hasto buy bedroom slippers for herself whohas any friends. Having then discovered somethingthat would be acceptable, if possible, make it yourself
