was a child, my brother and I were al-ways turning the house upside downwith our romps. Mother never eared,if we put things to rights again, which,of course, we did not always do. Thenit was— Caroline, put that cushion whereit belongs. Will threw it on thefloor, mamma. Or, Will, did youleave those books on the floor ? Nom,Caroline did it. My mother always looked verygrave at this. One day, after the usualquestion and answer about a towel orsomething that had been thrown onthe floor, she called me to her. Caroline, she said, when I was alittle girl, I was taught that it was myduty never to pass by a thing out ofplace without putting it in place, whether I or some one else had origi-nally misplaced it. Do you think youcan learn that ? Something about my mothers man-ner stamped the words indelibly onmy mind. I never can forget them.It has grown to be a habit with menow to put things back whenever Ifind them out of place. I scarcelyknow I do it. And I dont want otherpeople to notice it,
