* OUR GREAT AMERICAN WRITERS PART II BY ELEANOR COLBY JAMES FENIMORE COOPER When Judge William Cooper moved from NewJersey to the little settlement on Otsego Lake,James, the youngest of the eleven children, wasonly a year old. He was born September 15,1789. Judge Cooper had bought thousands ofacres of land, and the people in the little settle-ment were very proud of the beautiful homewhich he built on the shores of the lake, and wereglad to name the village Cooperstown in hishonor. Judge Cooper called his home OtsegoHall, and it was one of the finest places in thecountry.
