* OUR GREAT AMERICAN WRITERS PART II BY ELEANOR COLBY JAMES FENIMORE COOPER When Judge William Cooper moved from NewJersey to the little settlement on Otsego Lake,James, the youngest of the eleven children, wasonly a year old. He was born September 15,1789. Judge Cooper had bought thousands ofacres of land, and the people in the little settle-ment were very proud of the beautiful homewhich he built on the shores of the lake, and wereglad to name the village Cooperstown in hishonor. Judge Cooper called his home OtsegoHall, and it was one of the finest places in thecountry. In those days there were real Indians roamingthe forests, and they were not all bad Indians, sothe Cooper boys learned many things from them— things which the Boy Scouts of to-day have tolearn from books. James was just like any other boy. He spentmuch time out in the open, learned his lessonsat the little district school, and liked to readtales of adventure. When he was eleven yearsold he and his chum read a book
