For a dark cloud began to grow over the Neth-erlands when by seizure, purchase, succession, ormarriage of heiresses, the most considerable ofits states passed under the sway of the Dukes ofBurgundy. We know how these dukes wished toannex Switzerland as well as the Netherlands andmake one long, independent kingdom betweenFrance and Germany.
