Description
English: The Boathouse Pub, Water Row, Newburn, near to Newburn, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Great Britain.

Built as a public house c. 1830 <a title="http://sine.ncl.ac.uk/view_structure_information.asp?struct_id=974" rel="nofollow" href="http://sine.ncl.ac.uk/view_structure_information.asp?struct_id=974">Link</a><img style="padding-left:2px;" alt="External link" title="External link - shift click to open in new window" src="http://s0.geograph.org.uk/img/external.png" width="10" height="10"/> the pub sign reflects an association with boat racing on the River Tyne which once was a great spectator sport and is still popular today from the boat clubs nearby <a href="https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1038625">NZ1665 : Oarsmen on the Tyne</a>

Stones on the right hand side (below the pub sign) are incised with flood level marks 1856, 1830, 1815 and 1771 <a href="https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1977637">NZ1665 : Flood markers, The Boathouse Pub, Water Row, Newburn</a>. The 1771 flood reached unprecedented heights and destroyed Newcastle bridge.

On the left is a Tyne and Wear County Council plaque which commemorates association of George Stephenson with Water Row pit, where from 1798 to 1801 he was in charge of Robert Hawthorn's new pumping engine and his father, Robert, was fireman.
