Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Black Prince Flower Boat Procession - geograph.org.uk - 789483.jpg |
English: The Black Prince Flower Boat Procession The Black Prince Procession is a Mayday custom in the villages of Millbrook, Kingsand and Cawsand. It takes place on Mayday bank holiday which this year (2008) is the 5th of May. The procession starts in Millbrook in the morning then moves to Kingsand and ends up on the beach at Cawsand where a model boat, The Black Prince, bedecked in flowers is floated out to sea to say goodbye to the harsh weather of Winter and welcome in the warm Summer weather. The procession is seen here gathering outside the Rising Sun pub in Kingsand. The origins of the tradition relates to boat-building in the area and the model boats showcased the work of apprentices who would receive small payments from the public as they processed their models. |
