Description
English: The British Naval Franklin Search Expeditionː Noon in mid-winter. HMS Enterprise and Investigator wintering under the command of Captain Sir James Ross. London: Ackerman and Co., 1850. William Henry James Browne (d.1871).

W.H. Browne served on board the Investigator, and in addition to producing views, led one of the four search parties sent out by Ross during the short spring of 1849. Browne returned to the Arctic in May 1850 on the expedition led by Captain Austin.
Lieut. Browne was an officer on the fourth expedition in search of Sir John Franklin (disappeared in 1845 while seeking a northwest passage). This was for a colour plate used in Ten Coloured Views Taken During the Arctic Expedition, London: Ackermann & Co., 1850. 8pp.

He served again on H.M.S. "Resolute" under Capt. H.T. Austin on the 1850-51 expedition in search of Franklin, which found traces of Franklin's first winter camp on Beechey Island from 1845-46, as well as the graves of John Torrington, John Hartnell, and William Braine.
