in a number of thecharities which sprang up ; and in clauses of willsone came upon moneys left for Bibles chained inthe pews in church/ and Bibles in 8vo in Englishfor poor mens children, while in 1645 provisionwas made by one good Christian to send ** to everyhouse a Bible to the worlds end. Of the fortunate circumstance that the newversion was essentially but a revision, nothing can besaid more suggestive than the following passagesfrom the Introduction to the Eversley Edition : Had the translators had no existing Englishversion but that of Wyclif to work on, it is probablethat the necessary divergence (in language) mighthave proved so great that the result would have beena wholly new translation ; and one can hardly doubtthat it would have been a translation into the vocabu-lary and rhythms of Jacobean English, destined in allprobability to ultimate supersession. ... m Anglo-Saxon People the Authorized Version are full of words which occurnowhere in the translation itself; and while thesecertainly include many which have continued indaily use—words so common as brevity, cowardice,credit, condole—a large number of them, words likedehort, inconsideration, incorrigibleness, omnipotency,propinquity, calumniation, have been on the wholerejected by the permanent genius of the language.As it happened, there was a linguistic standard ofBiblical translation before the revisers. By asingular and surprising felicity, this joint resultcombined the merits rather than the faults ofindividual members, and the result was a permanentmasterpiece of language.
