Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Bell Mast, Chatham Dockyard - geograph.org.uk - 1613094.jpg |
English: The Bell Mast, Chatham Dockyard Near the roundabout entrance to the Historic Dockyard. Broadside (MHS Home HQ) and Dickens World Cinema are seen in the background.
The Bell Mast was originally made as a wrought iron ship's mast and fitted in 1872 to HMS Undaunted at Chatham Dockyard. The 100ft Mast was removed from the ship in the early 1900'S to be used as the Muster Bell which rang three times and alerted men that they were due to begin work. SEEDA has restored the Mast and 2001 it was placed In Western Avenue at the entrance to the dockyard. Below the Mast is a series of interpretations panels about the mast's history and an illustrated timeline of the mast and the dockyard See http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~brycefamily/undaunted.htm for more info on HMS Undaunted |
