BEATLEMANIA

Mania: described in the English
Dictionary as —

  1. Mental derangement
  Marked by excitement, hallucination.
  2. Excessive enthusiasm.

  The concocted word Beatlemania
entered the English language on 5th
November, 1963. It was used to describe
the public response to The Beatles at the
Royal Command Performance which
took place at the Prince of Wales Theatre
in London the previous evening.

This was a special acceptance which
knew no bounds by all ages and classes.
The public and the media became
captivated by the magnetism of the
Beatles music and their engaging
personalities.

Prior to this the group had played at
the London Palladium on the 13th
October. It was a live TV performance.
Thousands of fans surrounded the
theatre and screamed so loudly that they
could be heard inside the auditorium.
Their adulation was relayed through
television sets into living rooms
throughout the country.

  Beatlemania had reached epidemic
proportions in Britain by the end of 1963.

In America the word was spreading
about the four boys from Liverpool who
had taken Britain by storm.

[French] Beatlemania!
[Spanish] ¡Beatlemanía!
