Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Bear Inn - geograph.org.uk - 1331422.jpg |
English: The Bear Inn I have always known this junction as "The Bear Inn" although I see the pub name is now Bear and Dragon. When did that change? We are at the edge of Reading Borough Council's area here (I am standing in West Berkshire) so it has been the terminus of the 17 bus route for many years, as "corporation" buses did not go into neighbouring local authority areas. There be dragons! Ah, maybe that's where the pub name comes from? So most of the day a service 17 bus turns round here every 7 or 8 minutes. It used to be a crossroads, and the buses turned in the mouth of the junction. During the 1970s the popularity of the route (it remains Reading's busiest) meant that longer vehicles were bought (jumbos as they were affectionately called). So they could turn in one go the road on the left was widened. Subsequently a roundabout was put in, although the tyre marks show the track most vehicles take.
In the background is Tilehurst water tower, built on the highest land in the area and visible for miles around. Indeed, this is probably the highest point in Reading Borough, at 103 metres ASL. |
