Description

I took a trip to discover Ontario and discover I did. I will upload everything I learned on this trip and yes I took notes lol. Let us begin at the battle of the windmill.

This windmill is located on what was the battlefield, in November 1838, where men fought and died. The battle was split into two side obviously, One side fought to liberate Canada from British rule and the other side rallied to protect their homes or the established political order.

This windmill was built in the 1920s to serve the needs of local residents as they used it to grind their grain into flour or animal feed. After the 1838 battle, it was used as a temporary military post. Then in 1872, the Canadian Government converted the mill into a lighthouse that remained in service until 1978. Today the mill and the adjacent land is a national historical site.

Before the battle, many rebellions fled to the United States where a few joined American sympathizers in a new attempt to overthrow British rule in Canada. On the 12th of November in 1838, they landed 190 men on this battlefield and seized this windmill and nearby buildings.

The local people remained loyal by reporting to their militia units and a few days later 2000 militia and regulars besieged the mill. The rebellions seeing no escape surrendered on the 16th; eleven of them were executed and 60 more were exiled to Australia.
