For the defence of the heights of Brooklyn,which commanded the city of New York,Washington caused a line of works to beerected on a range of hills a short distancesouth of Brooklyn, and established there anintrenched camp. General Nathaniel Greenewas placed in command of this position, andexerted himself with vigor to strengthen it.When he had matured his plans he was sud-denly taken ill, and was obliged to relinquishthe commend to General Sullivan. The British fleet lay in Gravesend Bay,just without the Narrows, and Washingtonwas for a while uncertain whether they wouldmake their first attempt against the force onLong Island, or attack the city of New York.It soon became evident that the capture ofthe lines on Long Island would be their firstcare, and Sullivan was reinforced with sixbattalions, all that could be spared form NewYork, and on the twenty-fourth of AugustGeneral Putnam was placed in command ofthe forces on Long Island.
