Description
English: Built in 1905, this Spanish Baroque Revival-style church was designed by Rafael Gustavino and Richard Sharp Smith to serve as the St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, serving catholics in the city of Asheville. The building features a red flemish bond brick exterior, a large elliptical masonry dome, a two front bell towers with belfries and metal-clad domes, doric pilasters, stained glass windows, a decorative sculptural relief arched panel over the large front wooden entrance doors, engaged corinthian columns, a front gable parapet, decorative sculptures and pinnacles, a rough-hewn stone base, small domes at the northeast and northwest corners of the building, a two-story red brick rectory to the west of the church, with a gabled red terra cotta tile roof, six-over-six double-hung windows, stone trim, Spanish attic windows at the gable ends, and a small doric colonnade connecting the rectory to the church. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, and is a contributing structure in the Downtown Asheville Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and adjusted to its present size in 2011. The church was elevated to the status of minor basilica in 1993, and today, is known as The Basilica of St. Lawrence.
