| Description |
Originally constructed in the 6th Century AD as a large water deposit for the city, it has an area of 9,800 square metres (105,000 sq ft) and was capable of holding more than 17 Million gallons of water! There are 336 columns. It is surrounded by a watertight wall 4 metres (13 feet) thick. There is some evidence that about 7000 slaves were used to build the building. Today, only a small amount of water is retained and walkways have been constructed for the many tourists that come to see this remarkable ancient construction. Several books and video games use the Cistern in their plots and various films and documentaries have been made here, including From Russia with love (1963) and The International (2009) and Brotherhood of Tears (2013). |
