Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Bargate Now rather incongruously standing isolated in the High Street since its flanking walls were demolished to allow traffic to pass round it, the Bargate was the main gate to the mediaeval city, at the northern extremity of the city. Outside, to the north, was a ditch and bridge. The oldest parts of the building date from the 11th century, and there have been numerous later alterations, including cutting two addition arches for pedestrians in the 18th century. In 1522 the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V passed through the Bargate on his way home after a visit to King Henry VIII. Nowadays a regular market is held around the Bargate.
