only trouble would be to satisfy its rapacious appetite. My experienceof a young cuckoo was that it was not an interesting pet; it ate to repletion, thenwent to sleep, and started eating again directly it woke ijp. Of course a bird likethat is most difficult to keep clean in a large cage; it should have a fair-sizedaviary to itself, then perhaps it would be morejactive and eat less. The suppositionthat cuckoos suck eggs doubtless arose from the fact that the bird lays her eggs onthe ground and carries them in her mouth to the nests of the proposed foster-parents ; she may also have been seen to remove an egg from a nest in order tomake room for her own, but she is not an egg-eater. A. G. BUILER. July 2oth, 1917. (We hope the young cuckoo has been liberated. The illustrations of these beautiful birds have been madefrom living examples obtained by Mr. Walter Goodfellow and in thesplendid collection of our member, Mr. E. J. Brook. Although Ihave never had the pleasure of seeing them in the flesh, and probablyhave never more than glanced at their skins when looking over theBritish Museum series some eleven or twelve years ago, our harassedand much overworked editor has asked me to write an article aboutthem to accompany the plate; and he generously gives me permi
