| Description |
English: The Australia, Porthmadog According to local folklore, the storyline behind the pub name goes back to the days when slate carrying merchant ships used to sail from Porthmadog to ports around the world. One particular vessel sailed to Australia for the first time. The sailors never returned to the ship and so had to be replaced by an Australian crew. On return to Porthmadog, the pub was frequented by the Australian sailors and thereafter by any visiting ships with Australian crews, for which it became know as "The Australia". |
