English: The Ash Street War Memorial The Ash Street War Memorial Garden remembers the people who died when the Co-Op air raid shelter suffered a direct hit on May 7th 1941. The basement shelter under the Co-operative Societys premises on Stanley Road, was fully occupied when the blast blew out the front wall of the building causing the floors above to collapse.
Earlier that week, St Andrews Church Hall, in use as a rest centre, suffered a direct hit by a high explosive bomb, 37 people many of them made homeless by earlier bombing, lost their lives. Almost 2,000 Bootle residents were killed and injured by bombs during World War II and 15,000 homes were destroyed or damaged. |
