ner of HanoverSquare, of which the following description is given in the Memoirsof Thomas Armstrong, C.B.: The hall and staircase were ofadmirable proportions, and all the rooms on the first floor weresumptuously decorated. In two of them were painted ceilings said tobe the work of Angelica Kauffmann, one of them a copy of GuidosAurora, and there were fine mantelpieces of coloured marble, excellentin design and well executed. When, later on, the Club removed fromHanover Square to Dover Street, one of these mantelpieces was boughtby a generous member and transferred to the new house, where it isstill much admired. Another of them adorns a mansion in Scotland.Hanover Square was built about 1718, and named in honour ofGeorge—the first King of the Hanoverian dynasty—who had recentlycome to the throne. Strypereports a rumour that the common place of execution at Tyburnshall be appointed elsewhere for the removing any inconvenience andannoyance that might thereby be occasioned to Hanover Square orthe houses thereabouts. The agitation, though strongly supported,was unsuccessful.
