e stage. The pontoons are maintainedin their respective places relatively to each other by means of threelongitudinal kelsons running over the entire length of the stage, and bya fourth kelson stretching over the extent of the long caissons only, or thewide portion of the stage; the outer kelson, that is the one farthestremoved from the wall, is 4ft. 6in. deep, and the following ones aregradually increased in height to such extent as to give the deck a suffi-cient incline from the wall towards the outer edge, to allow the rainwater or the spray to run off freely from the stage. The kelsons and the pontoons are constructed in every respect likethose of the Princes landing stage illustrated in a previous number, withthis exception only, that the pontoons have rounded bilges—in ouropinion a useless cause of expense to the builder. The stage proper consists of two layers of pine planking, the upper one2in. thick, running transversely to the stage, and the lower one 4in. thick, FLoM 292.
