y, and the night as brought thatlittle child safe to the door of the * Devils Own, brought also anangel of light to the heart of Dick Kent, and, maybe, others of thatgang. 176 BETWEEN THE LIGHTS. Ere the westward fires have faded, While the distant hills yet glowWith the suns last benediction, Where he lingers loath to go;While the birds are homeward flying Ere the dark their way benights,And the vesper bells are ringing, Comes the hour between the lights. Ah, the memries dear and holy, Bright and tender, that combineIn lifes after hours, its moments. In our heart of hearts to shrine !For our sweetest dreams come to us, While the daylight slowly dies,And our sweetest words are uttered Neath the purple gloaming skies. Blithesome lads, and bonnie lasses, How I hope and pray for you.Only memries bright and holy. Only joys deep, pure and true,May be yours while vesper glory Falling night with day unites,Only happy thoughts to hallow The dear hour between the lights. Helen Marion Burnside,

THE ARGOSY. SEPTEMBER, i88g. THE VILLAGE BLACKSMITH. BY DARLEY DALE. AUTHOR OF FAIR KATHERINE. CHAPTER XXV. MRS. RYOT-TEMPEST IS BAFFLED. ^ ATURE is capricious, never more capricious than in matters of-^^ climate. She will spoil what might have been a soft, balmyspring day with a cold east wind, she will give us snow in June andthunder in December, rain when we dont want it and drought whenwe want rain. The day on which the Archdeacon started for his firstvisitation, leaving Vera at home to the tender mercies of her step-mother, was an April day ; the sun was shining brightly but thewind was east, therefore cold, cutting, cruel. The Archdeacon was a chilly mortal and would have enjoyed thewarm, genial, April sun but for the cold blasts which every now andthen made him shiver. As he rode to the station the sun and thewind reminded him of the two women he had left at home. The sunwas like his bright, beautiful Vera; and, oh, how happy he might havebeen with her but for Mrs. Ryot-Tempest
