THE ARGOSY AUGUST, 1SS4. THE WHITE WITCH. CHAPTER XXII.dicks wounds. THREE oclock was chiming forth from the various clocks ofCroxham Abbey in the early morning, as Godfrey Mayne lefthis step-mothers room with his father, followed by Lydia. Themaid swiftly disappeared. Godfrey dutifully accompanied Mr.Mayne to the door of his new quarters, the Swallow chamber, wishedhim good-night, and then went back along the cross passage, deep inthought. He knew that some audacious intruder must have got into theAbbey and penetrated to Mrs. Mayne ? room : a strong impressioniay upon him that the man had not yet effected his escape, but wasconcealing himself somewhere or other. Was it Dick Wilding ?Godfrey did not know. If it was, Mr. Dick should be treated to thesoundest castigation he had ever yet experienced—and his migrationseffectually stopped for the future.
