THE next morning found no change in Mrs. Ravens determina-tion to return at once to Ravenscourt. Mrs. Connell hadexhausted reason in pleading with her to remain, and felt that shehad no fresh inducements to hold forth. It was easy to declare thatMrs. Raven was wrong in feeling that she, a sick and nervous invalid,was an undesirable guest, and to urge that duty and affection madeany such burdens light: but it was not easy to combat her argumentsthat such a sufferer was best at home—that even familiar furnitureand faces might have a soothing effect on wrung and shattered nerves.
