. Notre Dame withall its beauties is conspicuous. The boulevards may be traced in along continuous line, and even here their trees look fresh and green. The crowds of people and carriages look like puppets in a show. There is a slight constant movement or agitation. We are lookingdown upon a world in which we seem to have no part. We beginto feel as if we could realise the sensations of those who may begazing at us from some far-off star or planet: a race of beingsendowed with hmitless powers of vision. The worlds fair at ourfeet is absolutely bewildering. The banks of the Seine are hnedwith buildings that seem to have sprung up in a night, like mush-rooms. Everything is pregnant with life and movement, excitementand animation. The river itself is as animated as the land. Steam-boats are constantly running up and down, crowded with passengers. The floating baths were never so much patronised. And, alas ! thatsad building under the very shadows of Notre Dame, the Morgue, was never so full.
