Even the gloomy fortressof St. Elizabeth, which knew its best days in the time of the VirginQueen, looked iDright, picturesque and dignified, worthy its tradition.The tide was high, and it was now surrounded by the shimmeringwater, and small white-winged boats flitting about the bay lent theirenchantment to the scene. Just beyond the Castle were the ruins ofthe Hermitage, of far greater antiquity than the Castle itself, and ofmore romantic interest.
