Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Arena, Piazza Bra, Verona (4809401837).jpg |
This is The Arena in Piazza Bra, Verona, Italy. Also known as Verona Arena or by the Italian: Arena di Verona. It is now used for the Opera. As you can see, they had all these set pieces outside, around The Arena. It reminded me of the Colosseum in Rome (which we visited in 2006). Only this one is actually in use and is not a ruin (like the Rome one). It is the second largest one in Italy outside Rome. It was built in AD 30 on a site which was then beyond the city walls. By the 3rd Century AD, the Emperor Gallienus extended the walls to include the Arena in the city. Some opera perfomances took place here in the 1850's. By 1913 they started to have regular opera performances here. It has also held pop concerts of popular music bands. |
