bolted with suitable chippingstrips for adjustment. The upper seat is se-cured to a large circular ring built into themasonry (ff), to the upper side of \\+iich, andupon which, the tubbing rests. The waterenters the vertical tunnel over the valve fromthe upper level, or lock, by the conduit 3/, andpasses off from under the valve by the otherconduit z. The latter, except when the valveis open, will be always empty, and affords themeans of getting in under the valve, at anytime, to examine it as to staunchness, &c. The central support of the lower valve-seatis a short hollow column, with radial ribs tostiffen the bottom plate (d d). It will be seenthat adjustments are provided for every part ofthe valve in its place, and that the arrange-ment admits of the utmost facility in getting atthe valve above or below.
