Handsome seats, chairs, and other articles offurniture suitable for a saloon, might be arranged according tothe taste of the occupant; but in their shape the strictest con-formity to the character of the building should be adhered to. Now having made a detailed survey of the saloon, let us con-sider its general effect; the mellow tints, glowing over the whole;the various shadows thrown from the columns and arches; thesparkling of the gilded bosses and emblazonry of heraldiccolours; the rich tone of the stone; and the great height to thesummit of the lantern, all combined, produce a mystery and in-tricacy highly interesting and picturesque. I must not omitmentioning the arch from the gallery, looking into the hall,which will add very much to the effect: it also corresponds withthe one on the landing of the stairs. court (^g. \29. p) should correspond with the doors : in fact, itshould be a kind of glazed door. All the doors from the saloonshould be hung folding, and should be richly carved. The first thing that would strike a stranger, on entering thedrawingroom, would be the large window in the recess at the 262 Design for a Villa end of the room, the upper parts of which should be of stainedglass; and, in fact, all the windows in this room should beglazed in this manner. After the eye had become perfectly ac-quainted with this object, it would naturally turn to somethingnew: perhaps the next thing would be the recess, where thefireplace is, on each side of which would be a window, but notreaching to the ground, like the one last mentioned. Over thefireplace is to be a window which would look into the conserva-tory. It may be here proper to mention that the drawingroomwill not be indebted only to the fire in the open grate for itscomforts; as the apparatus which heats the saloon and hall willa
