Mr. Oakey had a very thorough train-ing in architecture and his many bril-liant natural gifts led him into variouslines of work, more or less related toarchitecture, such as acoustics, stainedglass, wall paper and landscape garden-ing. In earlier days he worked in theoffices of such men as R. M. Hunt ofNew York and Norman Shaw of London. At one time he was in partnershipwith his brother-in-law, Mr. SullivawJones, later of the firm of Palmer, Horn-bostel & Jones of New York City. Mr. Oakeys career as an architect wasvaried and picturesque and included suchinteresting commissions as the restora-tion of the Villa Mattel near Rome andthe construction of a mansion in San-tiago. Chile. Mr. Oakey upheld the finest traditionsof his profession with a dignity and adistinction in striking contrast to therough and readv methods so generallyprevalent heretofore in the West.
