In the South, five states—NorthCarolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Ala-bama and Tennessee—have a thick over-growth of high-power transmission-lines,the cables of eight systems with physi-cal interconnection, so that energy froma score of hydro-electric plants, helpedout by some steam-turbine stations,flows through the combined system tothe section that needs the energy most.The Southern Power Company, with 1,300miles of transmission-lines, is alreadyfurnishing the drive for 150 cotton-mills.At the western end of this southern in-terconnected zone two new develop-ments now approaching completion willsoon be joined, it is said, and then thecopper of a great arterial system will becontinuous from the Atlantic to the Mis-sissippi.
