Description |
English: Satire on Admiral Byng; Byng, in fetters, is visited by the ghost of his father, the naval hero George Byng, Viscount Torrington, who harangues him in verse; on a table are books lettered "Spanish Armada" and "Matthews and Lestock"; on the wall behind the figures are two pictures, one in which Byng addresses the Duke of Newcastle, "Pray your Grace let me be sent", and the other in which a figure of Justice points to a mob carrying an effigy of Byng, labelled "I Could not Fight", towards a gallows at the foot of which lies a sheet of paper lettered, "Gazetta B[yng']s Letter Lyes and Nonsence". 1756

Notes |
References in the verses include: General Blakeney, lieutenant-governor of Minorca who surrendered the island after Byng's departure; Captain Cunningham who played a part in its defence; Captain Andrews who was killed in Byng's skirmish with the French fleet; Captain Noel who was wounded; Byng's brother Edward (1706-56) who died after visiting him in Portsmouth on 28 July 1756. The lettering on the book on the table suggests a parallel between the Byng affair and the aftermath of the battle of Toulon in 1744 when Vice-Admiral Richard Lestock was court-martialled, and acquitted, and Vice-Admiral Thomas Matthews cashiered. |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
