In 1902 there were 42 life insurancecompanies having headquarters in the State,and of this number 24 were located in DesMoines, the Hartford of the West? Of the42, 10 were old line life companies, carryinginsurance to the amount of $36,972,257; 8 wereassessment companies, carrying $209.955,500; 16were fraternal benefit associations, carrying$168,418,000. Total of insurance carried byIowa companies, $415,345,757- Education.— Iowa stands second in theliteracy of its population; 99.63 per cent of thosefrom 10 to 14 years were, in 1900, able to readand write, although there was no compulsoryattendance law prior to 1902. IOWA pended $9,556,890 on its schools, there bejng18,513 schoolrooms with 22,708 teachers holdingcertificates, (he enrollment of children in thepublic schools in that jrear reached 5o.i;.v(here has been a liberal increase in the wagesof teachers during the school year of 1902 and100.;. About one third of the schools arelocated in towns and cities ami two thirdsin the country. Relatively few of the teachershave had normal training. One State nor-mal school and several private normal schoolswere in operation in 1900. In 1902 the Statenormal school had 28 professors and 28 otherteachers, with 2,065 students. Under a lawpassed in 1902, 16 private schools have becomeaccredited for the training of teachers underState supervision. For higher education thereare about 200 public high schools and a numberof private academics. The courses of studypursued are of high standard and generallyuniform.
