TORPEDO BOATS FIRING A WHITEHEAD. TORPEDO DRAG —TORPEDOES fitted with two torpedo tubes mounted on theimidship line and firing from either side. Theycan thus be utiHzed in torpedo attack and keepthe sea in all weather operating far from abase. Torpedo Boat Warfare.—During the days ofthe spar torpedo in the American Civil War,the Russo-Turkish war, and the war betweenFrance and Cliina, there were 15 attacks madeby torpedo boats with this weapon. Twelve ofthese attacks were made at night aiid three bydaylight. There were 2i torpedo boats engagedin these attacks and the number of men employedwas about 350. Three boats were lost and 12men were killed. On the other hand, they suc-ceeded in sinking four ships and injuring three,with a total loss of over 400 lives. At that timeships were armed with muzzle-loading smoothbores, howitzers, and machine guns.
