STEEL-WOOL — STEELE paniment of a rapid succession of blows, astream of the finished wire nails begins to pourout of the side of the machine into small ironboxes placed to receive them. The wire firstpasses between two pairs of horizontal, groovedwheels, which are pressed firmly together togive the required tension to the wire as it isdrawn into the machine after each finished nailhas been formed and cut off. The nail is pointedby the action of a pair of pliers with V-shapedcutting edges, and the head is formed up by theaction of a very powerful cam-operated member,which strikes a hammer-like blow. As each nailis finished, the wire is gripped, and enough of itdrawn forward to form another nail.
