eon .r-ray plates of standard makes issued bythe army. The plates were developed bythe tank method, with Eastman .r-ray de-veloper. The transformer was one of theBase Hospital types issued by the army. Theexposures were timed by a special timer, depending upon the principle of fallingweights, its correctness having been checkedby stop-watch and metronome. Because ofthe shortness of the exposures, it wasthought necessary to time them for a defin-ite perifxl of the cardiac cycle, in order toavoid possible variations in size due tosystole and diastole. The timer w^as there-fore actuated by a special mechanism set offby the pulse wave (Fig. 5). This was merelyan adaptation of the wrist piece and tam-bour of the Mackenzie polygraph, with thewriting arm ecjuipped with a platinum endthat dipped into a mercury cup to close theelectric circuit which actuated the timer. The timer could be set to make the exposurewith the pulse beat or at definite fractionsof a second after the pulse (Fig. 17).
