the diaphragm, their shadows willappear lower in the lung field on dia-phragmatic inspiration, because of thegreater descent of the diaphragm with thistvpe of breathing. This change in theposition of the hilar shadows may amountto two interspaces or more, and be associ-ated at times with appreciable changes inboth outline and density. In Figure 2there is an annular shadow adjacent to the 630 Mutation of Pulmonary Shadows Due to Type of Breathing left hilum on diaphragmatic breathing,but, as may be seen in Figure 1, this isabsent on thoracic breathing. Of particular interest to the presentdiscussion, however, is a difference in thedistribution and mutation of the pulmo-nary shadows, which may be appreciated striking, and in Figures 5 and 6, thoughdifferent, it is still quite evident. It has been suggested that the film oncostal breathing best serves for a pathologi-cal interpretation of tuberculosis. Thissupposition, however, is not supported byanv known facts.
