iagnosis. i8 The Lumbar Spine and Sacroiliac Joints What shall be the evidence necessaryfor the interpretation of an arthritis?Acute infectious arthritis of the lowerlumbar and sacroiliac joints is not commonin the general class of cases with acuteback symptoms. When seen in the sacro-iliac joints it gives a distinct picture, un-less it be in the very early stage. In the lum-bar articulation the interpretation is muchmore difficult. In hypertrophic or osteoar-thritis more than one joint is involvedand the interpretation is more easily interpret injury? Extreme violence mayproduce fracture of one or more of thebodies of the lumbar vertebrae, thoughcompression fracture is less common thanin the dorsal bodies. Fracture of thetransverse process is somewhat common, occasionally accompanied by fracture ofthe spinous processes. Fracture of thearticulating process and the lamina arevery uncommon or may be difficult ofrecognition. Fracture of the lumbosacralarticulation is apt to be accompanied

Is it not possible for error tobe made in interpretation of an osteo-arthritis of the lumbar joints or thelumbosacral joints? Such errors have beenseen repeatedly. To the orthopedic surgeon arthriticjoints give symptoms of a different charac-ter than those of lower back strain.Although certain cases ma\ be confusing,a careful study of the case will easilydifferentiate the two types. The overgrowth of bone about the flator sacral joints has the appearance ofproduction from arthritic change, butcareful observation of roentgenograms ofsymptomless backs wi
